- Description: Google is trialling a programme in which selected publishers are paid for content that helps generate answers in Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode. It is the first sign that being a source for AI can have direct value, not just brand value.

## What is happening

Google is testing a programme called AI Contribution. Selected publishers can be paid for content that clearly helps generate answers in Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode (Top Online).

The programme covers at least several dozen publishers, mostly small and medium-sized ones. It is run through Search Console.

## Where the sources agree

The background is the same across sources: Google keeps building Gemini into more parts of Search. After AI Overviews and AI Mode came Search Live, and results will keep changing with each new model (Search Engine Land).

The advice for publishers is consistent too. To appear in answers from Gemini and AI Overviews, publish specific content on your own site rather than relying on other channels.

## Where they differ

So far only one source covers the programme itself. We do not know how Google decides that content has “significantly helped” or how much it pays.

Measurement is also an open question. In analytics, traffic from Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode lands in the same bucket as organic Google traffic. That makes it hard to tell what the content AI uses actually delivered.

## What to do about it

If you run a content site, check Search Console to see whether you have access to the programme. If you don't, watch for it to appear.

Regardless of the programme, check whether your brand shows up in Google's AI answers. Track AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini separately, because each may show different sources.

## Our take

Testing payments for AI content marks a shift in tone: Google is acknowledging that AI answers rely on publishers' work. For now it is a narrow pilot, so do not change your strategy to chase programme money, but treat presence in Gemini answers as a separate goal to measure.

**Confidence:** low - only one source covers the programme, and we do not know its rules or rates. **We will change our view if:** Google publishes the programme rules and opens it to a wider group of publishers, or the test ends without a rollout.
