## The week in three sentences

This week showed how easy it is to misread data when AI tools change the way they link. How AI bots and agents get onto your site, and what they're allowed to do there, is becoming more important. In ads and shopping, Google is taking over more decisions, and your job is to set the right goal and feed the system the right data.

## ChatGPT traffic didn't vanish - it just stopped signing its name

*Signal: 4 independent sources this week, 6 in 30 days; tracked since 2025-12-27.*

Since early October, GA4 has shown a clear drop in visits from ChatGPT, by as much as half on some sites. OpenAI stopped adding the utm\_source=chatgpt.com tag to its links, which is the label analytics uses to recognize the source.

That traffic wasn't lost; it now shows up as direct traffic. An analysis of about 500 sites found that ChatGPT visits fell by roughly the same amount that direct visits grew (Adobe).

What to do: don't draw conclusions from the ChatGPT drop alone - compare it with direct traffic to the same pages.

## A server error on robots.txt can halt all indexing

*Signal: 2 independent sources this week, 2 in 30 days; tracked since 2020-05-21.*

If your server responds to a robots.txt request with a 503 error, Google pauses indexing of the entire site. Gary Illyes from Google also reminded everyone that robots.txt only tells crawlers what they may fetch, not what they can do with the content afterward.

With AI, that distinction matters. OpenAI has one crawler for search and a separate one for model training. Blocking the search crawler removes your site from ChatGPT search results, although its URL may still appear there as a link.

What to do: make sure robots.txt always responds correctly, and block AI crawlers deliberately, one at a time.

## AI agents visit your site just like ordinary customers

*Signal: 7 independent sources this week, 8 in 30 days; tracked since 2026-07-08.*

New AI agents, such as Meta's Muse and OpenAI's Dots, reach businesses in two ways: either through a ready-made connection to the store's system, like the Shopify catalog, or through a cloud browser that poses as a regular user.

Neither Meta nor OpenAI has said how these browsers identify themselves, so there is nothing you can put in robots.txt to recognize them. Sundar Pichai expects agents to use both routes.

What to do: make sure the key facts about your offer are easy to read on the page, because an agent reads it the same way a customer does.

## Google gathers purchases from many stores into one cart

*Signal: 2 independent sources this week, 2 in 30 days; tracked since 2026-10-20.*

Universal Cart, a shared cart in Search and Gemini, has launched in the US. Shoppers add products from different stores, and Google tracks prices, promotions and availability. When a price drops or an item is back in stock, the shopper gets a notification.

Checkout happens through Google Pay or on the store's own site. Partners include major brands and Shopify merchants. Stores now compete on price and availability in a space they don't control.

What to do: keep the prices and stock levels in your product feed up to date, because in a shared cart any outdated detail works against you.

## In Google Ads, the goal now decides the result, not the bid

*Signal: 2 independent sources this week, 7 in 30 days; tracked since 2021-08-02.*

Google Ads has taken over most decisions, from query matching to budget allocation. Your control has shifted from the auction to the goal you give the system (Search Engine Journal). This week, Google also expanded Smart Bidding Exploration from Search to Performance Max and Shopping campaigns.

If your goal is every submitted form, the system will learn to collect forms, including worthless ones. That's why Google recommends using qualified leads, or leads that turned into sales, as the goal.

What to do: set up enhanced conversions for leads so the system can see which leads actually made money.

## ChatGPT got a new model, but it differs for free and paid accounts

*Signal: 3 independent sources this week, 4 in 30 days; tracked since 2026-07-21.*

OpenAI is rolling out GPT-6 in ChatGPT along with a new interface (Intelligent UI). Free accounts and the Go plan get the Luna variant, while higher-tier paid plans get Sol.

This means you and your customers may get different answers from ChatGPT depending on the plan. A brand visibility check on a paid account may not reflect what free users see.

What to do: check how ChatGPT talks about your brand from a free account as well.

## ChatGPT texts in the EU will carry an invisible watermark

*Signal: 4 independent sources this week, 7 in 30 days; tracked since 2026-07-08.*

Starting in October, OpenAI is adding an invisible watermark to ChatGPT and Codex texts in the EU. A watermark like this makes it possible to tell later that a text was written by AI.

The company had previously studied how users would react. Almost one in three said they would use ChatGPT less if texts were marked. If you paste AI answers straight onto your site, be aware that this may be detectable.

What to do: treat AI text as a draft that you edit and enrich with your own expertise.

## Google queries aren't actually getting longer

*Signal: 5 independent sources this week, 8 in 30 days; tracked since 2025-11-17.*

The common claim is that AI is making people type longer questions into Google. An analysis of two years of Google Ads campaign data from hundreds of advertisers in France, the UK and the US doesn't back this up (Eskimoz).

The results are preliminary, but they matter for planning campaigns and content. So far, the popular idea of long, conversational queries isn't holding up in ad data.

What to do: before rebuilding your keyword list around long questions, check the search terms report in your own account.
