GPT-6 arrives in ChatGPT, and which model you get depends on your plan

OpenAI is rolling out GPT-6 in ChatGPT in two variants: Sol for paid plans and Luna for free ones. Alongside them come GPT 6.1 Sol for demanding work and the very fast GPT 6.1 Terra. The same name, ChatGPT, now means different models for different people.

What is happening

OpenAI is bringing GPT-6 to ChatGPT together with a new interface called Intelligent UI (Search Engine Journal). In chat mode, GPT-6 is now the default model.

The model comes in two variants. Free and Go users get the lighter Luna, while paid plans get the more capable Sol.

Models from the 6.1 series are arriving at the same time. GPT 6.1 Sol is built for demanding coding and professional work (Goldie SEO Tips). GPT 6.1 Terra is described as exceptionally fast (Bijan Bowen).

Where sources agree

Sources agree that OpenAI consistently splits its models into three lines. Sol is the most capable variant, while Luna and Terra are cheaper, faster options.

This split is not new. Back in the summer, OpenAI released three GPT 5.6 models the same way (AI LABS).

Sources also agree that in ChatGPT, the model you get depends on your plan. Someone on a free account does not see the same thing as a paying user.

Where they differ

Sources differ on the details of which plan gets what. According to one, Sol is already available on Plus, as well as on Pro, Business and Enterprise (Search Engine Journal).

According to another, Sol is the default only on Pro and higher plans (The AI Advantage). If you pay for Plus, that is a meaningful difference.

Future pricing is also unclear. One prediction is that OpenAI will raise the price of GPT 6.1 Sol (Theo - t3.gg).

What to do about it

Before you judge ChatGPT or compare it with competitors, check which model your plan gives you. A test on a free account says little about what a paying user gets.

If you track what ChatGPT says about your brand, remember that different people are talking to different models. Check answers across several account types.

Use the faster model for quick, simple tasks and the more capable one where quality matters. The differences in speed and cost can be large.

Our take

GPT-6 in ChatGPT is not one model but a family of variants tied to plans. For users, this means that what ChatGPT says depends on who is asking and what they pay for. Anyone evaluating models or brand visibility in AI has to take this difference into account.

Confidence: medium - several independent sources describe the same rollout, but they differ on the details of which models go to which plans. We will change our view if: OpenAI unifies the model across all plans, or Sol and Luna turn out to give practically the same answers to typical questions.
