MCP is no longer just for developers: it's reaching marketing tools
MCP is a standard that lets you connect external tools and data to an AI assistant. In recent weeks, it's not just developers talking about it - SEO and analytics tool vendors are too.

What is happening
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard for connecting tools to AI models. Put simply, it's a secure bridge between a chat and another app, such as a to-do list or accounting software (Tool Finder).
Until recently, the topic appeared mostly in developer tutorials. Now it's showing up in material from SEO tool vendors and in marketing media.
Where sources agree
Sources describe MCP in similar terms: you build a tool once as an MCP server and can then use it in any app that supports the standard. The standard is managed by the Linux Foundation.
They also agree on how it can be used in marketing. You can connect SEO data to ChatGPT or Claude and ask questions in plain language (WhitePress). An agent with access to your tool account can prepare a report or suggest new prompts to track (SemlyAI).
Where they differ
They differ in ambition. Some present MCP as a way to analyse data from all of a company's tools at once (sprawny.marketing).
Others take a more modest view and describe it as an extra toolbox for the agent. From that perspective, connecting services takes hours, but polishing the whole setup takes additional time.
They also differ on where it runs. An MCP server can run locally on your computer or remotely, at a web address.
What to do about it
Check whether the tools you already use have an MCP server. If they do, connect one of them to your assistant and ask it a question you would normally answer by clicking through reports.
Start with read-only data. Only let the agent make changes in your account once you've seen how it uses that data.
Our take
MCP has become the common language AI assistants use to talk to tools, and it's now reaching SEO and analytics tools. For marketers, it offers a chance to query data in plain language, but for now only on a small scale and with carefully limited permissions.
Confidence: high on direction - many independent sources describe the standard; low on how much time it actually saves in a marketer's daily work. We will change our view if: data emerges showing that working with data through MCP produces wrong answers more often than analysing reports manually, or the standard is displaced by another way of connecting tools.
