AI cites your pages but loses your brand along the way
AI answers increasingly link to your site without naming your company. In AI, being cited and being recognized as a brand are two different things, and you need to track both.
Signal in the data
Independent sources on this topic: 4 in the last week, 8 in 30 days, 15 in 90 days. We have tracked it since 2025-11-17; 52 claims in our database in total.
Number of independent sources per week (last 12 weeks).
What is happening
Study after study shows the same thing: AI happily uses content from your site but leaves your brand name out of the answer. The industry calls these ghost citations.
In a study of 16 million brand appearances, about 40% were ghost citations, rising to almost half in Google AI Mode (Writesonic). Another analysis found that most AI Mode citations don't include the brand name at all (Ahrefs).
Where sources agree
Everyone agrees that being cited as a source and being named are two separate things. Even for branded queries, AI Overviews mostly cite Wikipedia, YouTube and LinkedIn rather than the company's own site.
The same pattern appears when you compare the most-mentioned brands with the most-cited domains: the two lists overlap by less than half (Semrush).
Where they differ
Sources disagree on how much classic SEO helps here. One study found that more than two in five brands that perform strongly in Google are missing from language model answers (State of AI Search 2026).
Other data points the opposite way: Google traffic is the best predictor of whether a page gets cited in AI Mode (SE Ranking). On top of that, AI Mode and AI Overviews cite largely different URLs for the same questions, so the results also depend on where you look.
What to do
Measure two things separately: whether AI links to your site, and whether your company name appears in the answer. A link alone will not build recognition.
Take care of your brand in the places AI draws from: Wikipedia, YouTube, LinkedIn and industry sites. And write so that your company name is a natural part of the fact, not a footnote.
Our take
Today, getting cited by AI is only half the job, because the brand often disappears from the answer. Track brand mentions separately from links, and build your brand's presence beyond your own site.
Confidence: medium - several large studies confirm the effect, but their numbers and methods differ noticeably. We will change our view if: Google or OpenAI starts systematically showing the publisher's name next to every cited link in AI answers.
