AI traffic: hardly any clicks, but the ones you get are ready to buy

AI answers take clicks away from classic results, and only about one user in a hundred clicks a link inside the summary itself. That small stream of visitors, however, converts noticeably better than the rest.

What is happening

When an AI summary appears above the results, people click less overall. In the Pew study, clicks on regular results dropped by almost half, and the link inside the summary was clicked roughly once per hundred visits.

At the same time, data from many sources suggests AI traffic is worth more. Visitors who come from chats and AI answers stay longer and add products to their cart more often.

Where sources agree

They agree on the direction: fewer clicks from AI, but better ones. The explanation is consistent too: someone who has already asked AI about the details lands on your site with their mind almost made up.

Sources also agree that simple informational queries lose the most. When people are about to buy, they still want context, examples and comparisons, and an AI answer cannot fully replace that.

Where they differ

Estimates of the scale are all over the place. Some report conversion rates almost twice as high (Search Engine Land), others several times higher, and the boldest figures claim more than twenty times higher (Ahrefs).

Even the measurement is disputed. Google says ad and organic CTR in AI Mode are similar, but does not say how those users buy compared with regular search users. Traffic from AI Overviews is also hard to separate out in analytics at all.

What to do

Set up AI traffic as a separate channel in your analytics. Otherwise it gets lost in direct and referral traffic, and you cannot see what it is worth.

Do not count on keeping your old traffic from informational queries. Give people what AI cannot repeat: your own data, tools and comparisons built around a specific decision.

Our take

Search clicks shrink wherever AI shows up, and they are unlikely to come back. The traffic that remains is smaller but closer to a purchase, so judge it by sales, not by visits.

Confidence: medium - many studies confirm the drop in clicks, but estimates of the conversion advantage vary severalfold between sources. We will change our view if: A large study across many stores showing that AI traffic converts at the same rate as regular search traffic.
